Description

In this lesson, students will revise polite requests and their usage based on a text (conversation) that incorporates the target language. The lesson starts with the students sharing ideas about the pictures shown. Then, the text is introduced. Followed by TL clarification. Finally, both CP and FP are carried out emphasizing speaking skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide review and practice of language used for polite requests in the context of a conversation and sentence formation exercises

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a group discussion in the context of mechanic and technical problems

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1) T shows SS pictures of people dealing with some problems (3-4 pictures) 2) T asks SS what is going on in each picture 3) After SS participate briefly, T provides definite answer using new lexis from the book 4) T asks SS when was the last time they went through something similar (to create rapport)

Exposure (4-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1) T announces there will be a task. 2) T gives instructions: - SS have less than 1 min to read for gist - Then, T sends SS to BOR to work in groups and compare answers (don't rearrange SS now, do it in CP & FP) - 3 min is the time limit (1 min to read, 2 to do the tasks & compare, and 2 to get feedback )

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1) T shares screen with SS 2) T shows SS a clear template they can rely on 3) T goes over the structure without diving too deep into grammar, focusing mostly in the correct verb form 4) T elicits from SS as much as possible, helping them find the answers themselves (guided discovery)

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1) T shares screen with SS 2) T gives instructions to SS - Do exercises individually - Then, peer check in BOR 3) T help solve 1 exercise as example 4) Gives time limit (3min) 5) Check with peers (2 min) 6) Short feedback to check answers (1-2 min)

Free Practice (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1) T announces new task 2) T shares screen with students 3) T gives instructions - Work in groups (BOR) - Each SS chooses one coupon and reads it to another SS. - Student A read coupon 1 to SS B, SS B has to reply politely - Each student should read a coupon and "answer" a coupon at least once. 4) After 2 min, all groups in BOR get rearranged. Repeat task with new chances to improve or choose a different coupon 5) SS spend 4 min in total practicing in BOR 6) SS come back to practice 1-2 min and get instant feedback DEC: 2-3 to provide delayed error corrections after FP task and DEC of whole class
