Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice phrases with care.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a short converstion in the context of care.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Have learners talk about 1 or 2 questions related to the lesson topic, e.g. ”What do you care about most and least?” OCFB

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will read a short conversation about what issues are important in the forthcoming elections to get the gist of the text.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students have to highlight phrases in the text where the word "care" is used.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

FORM: Students identify which types of phrases and words are formed with the word "care": Idiomatic expressions Phrasal verbs Phrasal nouns PRONUNCIATION: Sentence stress: I read the sentences, or words aloud, and students identify where the stress is located.

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. Students complete sentences with words and phrases from the word bank. In a Google form: https://forms.gle/mJ4ufAWazuMgzYtB9 2. The learners do this individually and then check in pairs (via BORs). OCFB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students work in breakout rooms and set some supportive arguments to one of the statements below: a. We can learn many things from taking care of elderly people. b. Everyone benefits when elderly people live with their families. c. Not everyone is suited to a caring role. Then, they share their arguments with the whole class and the other groups type in the chat if they agree or disagree. DEC As students are talking, I take notes noticing potential mistakes, and type those sentences, So students can identify if they are correct or not, and correct them.
