Description

In this lesson, students will learn functional language, which can help them give their opinions or comment on their friends’ opinions. The lesson starts with a short YouTube video about The Apprentice, and students will be provided with some comprehension questions related to The Apprentice. Students will listen to audio material that is aimed at teaching functional language. Afterward, students will be asked to complete a given table with the functional languages that they learned. Also, they will be asked to put sentences in order and drill.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for Reaching Agreement in the context of Business.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide specific information listening practice using a text about Catering in the context of Business
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about The Apprentice in the context of Business

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To make students interested in a topic, the teacher is going to use a YouTube video about The Apprentice. Once students finish watching provided the video, they will be asked to answer two simple comprehension questions and share their answers.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will be provided with a reading text in which they will learn about The Apprentice. They will be asked to read extensively and share their ideas in terms of the main idea. When it comes to Part 1B, students will work individually. As soon as they finish the activity, they will be asked to check in pairs. Also, they will be asked to work with different pairs and ask four questions that they chose for their pair, including Part 1C.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will be asked to listen to audio material and choose correct answers by making circles or underlining them in Part 2A. Once they finish, they will be asked to check their answers in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will be provided with a list of functional languages, and they will be asked to tick the correct ones while listening to the audio material twice in Part 2B

Post-Reading/Listening (14-17 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be asked to add other functional language examples that they learned to the provided section in the table in groups. Also, the teacher is going to provide the transcript of the audio material when it is necessary for part 3A. In Part 4A, they will be asked to put the given sentences in order, and in Part 4B, they will drill them.
