Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of functional language for expressing uncertainty in the context of a knowledge contest.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide reading and speaking practice in the context of a knowledge contest.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shares screen to Jamboard with an image of a famous contest show and asks Ss a few questions. *What do you think is this picture about? A show to win money. Have you ever seen it or know of a similar one? No...Yes...(name of a similar contest)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Gist task T shares next Jamboard page and tells Ss they will listen to someone doing the quiz. After audio T asks Ss 'Did he know the answers?' *Not all of them (he knew 3, 4 and 6) Detailed/ intensive task T shares link to Google Slides and tells students they'll be working in groups to fill up the missing parts of the audio script. T nominates Ss to check answers

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MFP 
T shares link to Learning Apps and asks Ss to do match activity individually. 
T nominates Ss to check answers 
T works together with Ss to review meaning with CCQ’s. *Do I know the answer? No *Did I know the answer? No *Is it new information? Yes ... 
 T asks Ss if all of the expressions can be used in formal and informal situations. T asks CCQ's on contractions. *What does 'I've' mean? I have *Which is the right contraction for it is not? it's not or it isn't? Both are correct T plays a pre-recorded model of the functional language and asks Ss to repeat.

Controlled Practice (4-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T shares link to Google Forms and asks Ss to answer activity individually. T sends Ss to Break out rooms to compare answers T nominates Ss to share their answers with the class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T sends students to break out rooms to work in teams to create at least 3 questions that are difficult, so the other team has to use the expressions learned. T nominates teams to ask their questions to the other teams, Ss take turns asking their questions.

Feedback and Error Correction (5 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production

T shares whiteboard and writes mistakes made by the Ss. T asks questions to Ss so they can identify what the problems are.
