Upper-intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide practice and clarification of environment-related vocabulary and issues that threaten the planet in the context of the current climate evenest that the world is witnessing.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To encourage them to apply critical thinking and practice problem solving because through these skills, they will be able to address the issues at hand, thus achieving the main aim of the lesson, which is being able to speak and write about this complex topic.
Procedure (37-49 minutes)
In order to lay the foundation of this complex topic, I will try to make it relevant to their lives and ask them about what the weather is like in their neighbourhoods/countries. I will also use some pictures to draw their attention to what is happening as a result of climate change.
Students will watch a video that features some floods and car exhaust fumes and the effects of such occurrences in real life. They then will be required to answer some brief questions in pairs based on the information in the video.
I will write down the most important terms that they have to be familiar with in order to proceed smoothly to the next stage.
I will then enunciate such words to model them and do some drilling. Afterwards, I will give them some handouts that demonstrate some collocations so as to learn the target words in chunks and to be able to retain them throughout the lesson.
Students then will be asked to do a role-play to form an organization that is concerned with protecting the environment. They are the ones who run such an institution. They will work in groups to come up with solutions to the problems they say in the videos and the ones that they already know prior to the class.
They will read a passage that contains the target language and do a gap-filling exercise along the way in order to reinforce what they acquired.
