Vocabulary Lesson about Climate Change
Upper-intermediate level

Description

Students in this class are going to be exposed to different aspects related to climate change, such as its causes, effects, and solutions. They will be presented with language pertaining to this subject. By means of videos, pictures, and audio clips, they will be required to make inferences and critically think about what they watched. Additionally, they will work in groups to discuss the factors that led to this phenomenon, reflect on its consequences, and brainstorm some steps to mitigate this problem. Learners have a good command of English and are able to tackle complicated topics.

Materials

Abc Pictures, videos, and handouts

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of environment-related vocabulary and issues that threaten the planet in the context of the current climate evenest that the world is witnessing.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To encourage them to apply critical thinking and practice problem solving because through these skills, they will be able to address the issues at hand, thus achieving the main aim of the lesson, which is being able to speak and write about this complex topic.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In order to lay the foundation of this complex topic, I will try to make it relevant to their lives and ask them about what the weather is like in their neighbourhoods/countries. I will also use some pictures to draw their attention to what is happening as a result of climate change.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will watch a video that features some floods and car exhaust fumes and the effects of such occurrences in real life. They then will be required to answer some brief questions in pairs based on the information in the video.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write down the most important terms that they have to be familiar with in order to proceed smoothly to the next stage.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will then enunciate such words to model them and do some drilling. Afterwards, I will give them some handouts that demonstrate some collocations so as to learn the target words in chunks and to be able to retain them throughout the lesson.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students then will be asked to do a role-play to form an organization that is concerned with protecting the environment. They are the ones who run such an institution. They will work in groups to come up with solutions to the problems they say in the videos and the ones that they already know prior to the class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

They will read a passage that contains the target language and do a gap-filling exercise along the way in order to reinforce what they acquired.
