Description

This is a reading lesson whose intention is to provide students with the opportunity to develop reading skills (gist and reading to detail) and to interact with an authentic test.

Materials

Abc Coursebook Face to Face Elementary, C. Redston & G. Cunningham, 2nd Edition, CUP, 2012

Main Aims

  • To enable students to develop their reading skills for gist and detailed understaning in the context of the history of Google.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To increase Ss vocabulary knowledge related to nouns and verbs.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Screenshare first slide. Teacher will show SS the name of the text and the picture of the google guys (Larry Page and Sergey Brin). In the next slide I will show them some statements about what the text might be about: Life before google, Larry and Sergey´s future plans, the history of google or the global problems. I expect Ss to participate and share their toughts.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will pre-teach the following items form the reading text as to make it more accesible to Ss: search engine, launch, build, billionaire. I will show a picture of the definitions and give examples of each one. Ask CCQ. search engine: is a search engine helpful or not? What search engine do you use? launch: do we begin something when we launch something? Do I have to plan it? build: are the men in the picture creating or destroying the house? billionaire: is a billionaire rich or poor? Ss will have to answer if the form is a noun, adjective or verb. I will pronounce each item three times and Ss will have to repeat each time after me. Each word has a green circle in the syllable where it should be stressed.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and a task.

I will share google forms link in the chat and tell students they have 3 minutes individually to read the text and choose the best headline for each paragraph. Correct answers: - The internet before 1998. - How Page and Brin met. - Building a new search engine. - Starting the business. Ss will have to submit their answers and we will check together. Ss will be showed if necessary where the keywords to the answers are.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Ss will have each one a slide with their names and the task is to indicate whether the statements are T or F. In the first slide Ss will find the text. They will have 5 minutes to read and 1 to answer. Ss will have the chance to check their answers with peers in BOR before open class feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Share a slide with three different groups (football fans, kids and women). In the bottom of the slide Ss will see different topics. They will have to decide what each group searchs for on the internet. I will build the first example: Women search for diets and health habits on the internet. Ss will have to drag the themes to each of the columns where the groups are. Ss will have to share what they search for on the internet too. Ss will go into the BORs to work in groups of three. I will monitor and gather mistakes for Delayed Error Correction.
