Vocabulary: countries and nationalities

Description

In this lesson the students learn and extend their knowledge for countries and nationalities. The lesson starts with a diagnostic test. This is followed by clarifying and drilling some words with students. Then students have a controlled practice and finally there is another test practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide review, clarification, extend and practice of countries and nationalities in the context of people and places.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and deduction reading practice using a text about countries and nationalities in the context of people and places.
  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about countries and nationalities in the context of people and places.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (0-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The teacher first asks the students where they are from then asks them to stand-up and stand in a line according to the alphabetical order of their names.

Test #1 (0-5 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

For Diagnostic Test the students do the 1a activity from the Cousebook p8, in pairs. Then the teacher provides the answer key by listening the audio record and writing them on the board.

Teach (0-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

The teacher chooses on the diffucult words and clarify these for students with focusing on the form and patterns and drilling some words with students.

Controlled Practice (0-10 minutes) • To provide students practice on the vocabulary of the target language

The teacher provides a puzzle in which students need to find the nationalities and write them on the board.

Free Practice (0-5 minutes) • To review and repeat the target vocabulary.

The teacher opens and hosts an online activity to review and repeat the target vocabulary.

Test #2 (0-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

For the second test the students work in pairs and do the quiz from the Cousebook p8. Then the teacher provides the answer key by listening the audio record and asks the students to exchage their papers and count the scores of their friends.
