Description

This lesson aims to expand the vocabulary of fifth grade students. It will be a brief review of the vocabulary of the solar system.

Materials

Abc Solar system word
Abc The planets

Main Aims

  • Teach students vocabulary related to the solar system using pictures and simple words.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Improve students' productive skills (speaking and writing) in English

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show images related to the solar system and present a short reading in English on the subject. Read aloud the reading and ask students to listen carefully. After reading, ask basic comprehension questions to check students' understanding.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Highlight and teach vocabulary related to the solar system using cards with the planets and elements of the solar system. Pronounce and repeat each word or phrase several times out loud. Ask students to repeat after you and practice the pronunciation.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Divide students into pairs or small groups. Provide each group with a picture of the solar system and cards with related words. Ask students to describe the image using the vocabulary learned. Encourage students to use complete sentences and ask each other questions.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Give students positive feedback for their efforts and good use of vocabulary. Correct pronunciation or grammar errors constructively. Review the keywords and useful phrases one more time before the end of class.
