Materials

Abc Olympic rings
Abc match the definition

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about Olympic Games.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of Olympic Games.

Procedure

Warmer / Lead in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context of olympics and engage students.

Start the lesson by showing Ss a picture of the Olympic rings and elicit the context of the lesson. Elicit the word medals (gold, silver and bronze). Ask SS in PW to discuss what Turkey's most successful Olympic sports are and provide a list of the top 5.

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

provide SS with match the definition HO. Get SS to work in PW connecting words to definitions. monitor Ss closely to be able a identify problems with words that have similar meanings. If need clarify meaning of words. provide Ss with answer key.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Provide Ss with reading text HO. The HO is about unlucky competitors in the Olympics. This is a reading for gist stage. Instruct the Ss to read quickly and give a time limit of two minutes to encourage them to read for gist. Tell the Ss that they need to decide on the best way to complete the title of the text. They can choose from a. winners, b. dreams, c. losers, d. records. Get Ss to check in PW. Check WC FB and establish how? and why? they came to that answer.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Refer Ss back to the reading text. Explain that the text talks about four Olympians and they should read each paragraph. For each paragraph write a sentence about what happens next. There will be not time limit. The Ss will read at their own pace to gain detail from the text. Get Ss to check their sentences in PW. In WC FB take a sentence for each paragraph. Establish why S decided to write what they did. Discuss with WG what they think about the sentence. Provide Ss with the correct answers.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Divide WG into smaller groups of about 3-4 Ss. Ask the Ss to think about interesting sports stories or tales about interesting people. Pose another question for discussion, 'Would it be good for Istanbul to hold the Olympics Games?' monitor the discussions and provide delayed feedback.
