Description

In this lesson, first I will set the context of health. After that, there will be a test on functional language on talking about health and some kind of medicine. When they finish, there will be a short speaking activity to make the Ss use the verbs and phrases they practiced. Then, there will be a reading for gist, and the Ss will put the illustrations in the correct order. When they finish, there will be a reading for details to get the Ss find the correct milestones for the statements. Finally there will be a speaking activity on the discoveries of modern medicine to get the Ss guess which one was chosen as the most important one by discussing with each other.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice in reading and answering gist and specific detail questions within the context of health.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Speaking about personal health problems and the treatments.
  • Vocabulary on discoveries of modern medicine.

Procedure

Warm-up (2-3 minutes) • To set the context of health & medicine

I will talk about some of my health problems and some medicine I used to set the context.

Vocabulary (5-7 minutes) • To set the context

I will give Ss a matching activity to form questions asking about treatment/medicine, and then I will ask them to ask those questions each other in pairs and talk about them.

Pre-teach vocabulary (5-6 minutes) • To introduce the vocabulary necessary for the reading

I will show some pictures to teach the vocabulary and try to elicit the words from the Ss. I will ask some CCQs on the new vocab.

While-Reading (5-6 minutes) • To practice scanning

Ss will be skimming the reading text on the most important discoveries of modern medicine to put the illustrations in the correct order.

While-Reading 2 (7-8 minutes) • To practice reading for details

Ss will be reading for details in order to find the correct name of the discovery for each statement on the HOs. They will work in pairs, and after they finish, there will be a feedback to justify their answers.

Post-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To practice speaking by guessing which discovery was chosen as the most important one in 2007.

I will ask to the Ss to discuss in pairs, which discovery is the most important one and why they think so. They will discuss and decide on the most important discovery in pairs first then I will ask them to join other pairs and to come up with one idea. At the end I will tell them the answer.
