Sentence formulation
A1 level

Description

In this lesson students learn to formulate simple sentences using the words learned in past classes on adjectives to describe people. The lesson begins with a dynamic that consists of showing disorganized sentences so that students can organize them according to the knowledge they have. After formulating sentences the students will learn about the correct grammar to write affirmative sentences about the characteristics of people or animals using the grammar (Subject + verb + predicate). Finally, according to what has been learned in class, the students will make two sentences, one to describe a person and the other to describe an animal.

Materials

Abc Jumbled sentences activity

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of affirmative sentences

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice using the grammar of affirmative sentences in describing people and animals.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Give feedback on what has been seen in previous classes using the vocabulary to describe people and animals. Have students describe what their mother is like using the vocabulary words they know. Ask students how they would answer the question, how is your mother physically? according to what was previously analyzed.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

Assign students an activity that consists of accommodating sentences involving the description of people and animals. The answers are free. Explain to the students that this activity is answered according to their criteria, that is, there are no correct answers.

Teach (15-20 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Discuss as a group the answers obtained in the sentences of the activity. Identify the mistakes made by the students when organizing the sentences. Explain in detail how the sentence should be organized following the grammar of affirmative sentences using the following order (Subject + verb + predicate). Show examples on the board of sentences using the grammar learned previously.

Test #2 (8-10 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

Write five disorganized sentences on the board. Ask students to individually organize the sentences correctly. Compare answers as a group once students finish the activity.

Free practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Instruct students to draw their best friend and write a sentence about their physical appearance. Instruct students to do the same with their favorite jungle animal.
