Description

In this lesson, Ss are introduced to two major skills of reading, reading for gist and for details, with an application on a short text selected for the same purpose. The lesson starts with a discussion followed by jigsaw reading where students read, express their thoughts and find phrases with specific meanings in the text. Finally, there is a free practice to produce a speaking outcome.

Main Aims

  • To provide Ss with practice in reading for gist and details in the context of trying something new.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give Ss practice in speaking for fluency
  • To unblock the meaning of selected vocabulary required for gist and further discussions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts his lesson by showing students an interesting quote. T asks students about their opinion on this quote and whether they agree or disagree. * Now guys, I want you to read this quote and think for 10 seconds to answer this question. " Your Habits Determine Your Future" To what extent do you agree or disagree with this quote? and why?

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • Pre reading Teaching (Vocabulary) MPF To clear the meaning of blocking words, deduction

T checks students’ awareness of the following words using a matching exercise. ( Meditate, get on, overcome). Then T starts to revise and check the words with students and provide them with clarification, and the right pronunciation.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

T asks students to read the second paragraph again. ( The writer's list of suggested activities) They have 30 seconds to do this. Ask them; Do you agree with the level of difficulty ( easy/ intermediate/hard) that the writer gives for each activity? Have a discussion.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To give learners a reason to read focusing on some specific information.

T presents the rest of the article(the comments) asking students to take 30 seconds to read them carefully. Ask them: What did each person do, and how successful were they? Answers vary Will ask them to read again to be ready to answer ex. B. They have 2 minutes. Provide the answers to check and discuss.

Post-Reading/Listening (6-10 minutes) • To provide Ss with a speaking practice

T will give them a minute to think about things they want to try for 30 days. Ask them to discuss their answers in pairs or as a whole group ICQ How many tips would you choose? How many minutes? Ask them to talk about their friends' ideas.
