Procedure (41-55 minutes)
In order to elicit the content words "food" or "chocolate", 5 Ss will be nominated to come to the board and wear a blindfold. All will wear blindfold at the same time and each of them will have to eat or drink some types of edible items of food (kitkat chocolate, water, apple, hazelnut chocolate, banana). We will check how many of them can guess the items of food while wearing a blindfold. The word "chocolate" will be elicited and displayed on the screen through OHP since two items of food were about that. They will be shown a picture of a dragon and they will be asked what it is made of? They will have to guess and a concise video relevant to the chocolate dragon will be played on the screen (in order to immerse them to the chocolate world).
There are two photos with three major differences adapted from textbook. They will be given 5 seconds to look at the first then the second one for 5 seconds. Then they will be asked to spot the differences: 1. The guy became thinner after 3 years. 2. The chocolate boxes got smaller. 3. The chocolate truck became smaller. At this stage: they will be handed their cellphones, laptops, tablets, i pads and all electronic devices (each individual has got one) to read the text online (Quizizz). Afterwards as an individual task, they will read a brief text in one minute to find out the reasons behind the three major differences they have already found. While they are reading the text they will be asked to type on thee platform by means of their electronic devices at least two reasons that they identified through reading.
The text will be displayed on their phones and they will be asked to highlight three types of comparative, superlative adjectives focusing on what happened in the past and how it has changed now. 1. Price: Now chocolate is more expensive than before. 2. Size: Chocolate bars are smaller and lighter than before. 3. Quality: The best news.....The worst weather....... They themselves will highlight by means of online interactive platform. And I will have access to what they have paid attention to (they can do it either in pairs or individually).
The target language (the sentences will be modeled) will be displayed on the screen as well as their phones, they will be asked to respond several (5 concept checking questions) CCQs by means of Quizizz simultaneously. As for the whole class feedback, the responses will automatically appear on their phones. Meaning alongside form will be clarified here. CCQs: 1. Chocolate bars aren’t as big as they used to be. a Chocolate bars are bigger now. b Chocolate bars are smaller now. 2. Now chocolate is more expensive than before. a Chocolate was cheaper before. b Chocolate was not cheaper before. 3. This situation isn’t good enough. a This situation is too bad. b This situation is better than before. The pronunciation will be clarified by drilling. The great advantage of using this online interactive platform would be the recording voice, they will be able to record themselves and their audio will be played for the whole class. So the pronunciation will be checked.
They will complete several gaps in 2 texts while writing (typing in pairs) the correct form of the word in brackets focusing primarily on meaning as well as form. (comparative & superlative adjectives) In addition to this, they will be shown 5 sentences and then they will be asked to rewrite the sentences while using that word without changing the meaning. (Cambridge-based tasks" transformation/nominalization)
They will be put in pairs or groups of three and they will have to compare each pair of food items using the comparative of the adjectives from the box. Then make another sentence with the same meaning using not as … as . There may be more than one correct answer. They will be asked to record a video or an audio through that platform inside the classroom while holding their phones.
In groups, follow the instructions below. • Find out the most popular snack items with the people in your class. • Ask people when they usually eat snacks. • Find out which snack has the biggest/smallest number of calories. Which result is most surprising? Then it will be turned into a mingling activity, they will be also taking some notes on their phones.
