Main Aims

  • To introduce practice of verb/noun collocations in the context of habits.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with further speaking practice by using the target language.
  • To provide students with relevant feedback.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students are introduced to some names from a text they read in a previous lesson. Students have to share what they remember about these characters in terms of their importance or role in the text; the teacher elicits as many answers as possible and note them on the board for a more visual record. The teacher shares the link to the text (Google Slides) and asks students to check their answers: Professor Wiseman – leading psychologist of a program called The People Watchers. Emma – a psychologist pretending to be a hairdresser. Jack – a psychologist who persuaded people to dress as a tree

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students are shown a set of verb/noun collocations and are asked to match them on a Google Slide – the teacher will ask students to check their answers in the text. Answers: Hold a sale Do experiments Cut hair Raise money for Jump a queue Watch a programme Get seats

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning - students are shown a set of questions and are asked to match them with one of the collocations: Answers: Which do you do to sell something cheaply - hold a sale Which do you do to avoid standing up - get a seat Which do you do to obtain new scientific information - do experiments Which do you do to avoid waiting in a long line (e.g. to get tickets) - jump a queue Which do you do to be informed or entertained - watch a program Which do you do to make someone look more beautiful - cut (your) hair Which do you do to help a charity - raise money Form - students are shown a set of sentences containing synonymous phrases that match the collocations. The teacher will ask students to replace the phrases with the collocations: Answers: They were trying to sell a cheap TV - hold a sale She was trying to sit down somewhere - get a seat We're working on new discoveries - do experiments He was trying to get in line to get the tickers first! - jump a queue I enjoy checking breaking news – it's sometimes interesting - watch a program She wanted to have a new style to look more beautiful - cut (your) hair They tried to collect the money, but it was pretty difficult! - raise money Pronunciation - students are shown the blended pronunciation found in one of the collocations and are asked to identify this change in the others: Answers: They were trying to hold a sale - blended pronunciation /hold a sale/ She was trying to get a seat - blended pronunciation /get a seat/ We're doing some experiments. He was trying to jump a queue - blended pronunciation /jump a queue/ She wanted to cut her hair to look more beautiful. They tried to raise money, but it was pretty difficult!

Controlled Practice (2-4 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are shown a set of sentences containing anagrams of the collocations – they will have to rearrange the letters in bold to find the answers. Answers: 1. We should go to the concert early so we can est gates - get seats. 2. They are going to heal loads to sell their old clothes - hold sales. 3. I'm going home early because I want to grammar two peach on TV - watch a programme. 4. He gave up his job because he didn't want to opened term six on animals - do experiments. 5. My cousin i shut car for a living - cuts hair.

Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students are asked to formulate 'have you ever' questions by using the collocations practiced before – they will work in Breakout Rooms. The teacher will monitor each room in order to note down any relevant/interesting piece of information for further feedback. In an open class fashion, the teacher will provide the students with some relevant feedback.
