Procedure (34-45 minutes)
I will ask the students a series of questions about the types of jobs they have had over their lifetime. 1. Do you know anyone who is self employed? 2. What do they do? 3. What kind of job you do you have? 4. Do you like you job? We will discuss their answers as a class.
I will use the listening lesson from CD3, track 47. They will listen to the audio. They must answer T/F and correct the false statements. This serves as the introduction to the present perfect. ACTIVITY: Please listen to this audio about Steve, Lucy, and Guy. Do they like being self employed? TICK THE TRUE SENTENCES, CORRECT THE FALSE SENTENCES. 1. Steve went to Mexico two weeks ago. T 2. He was in the Caribbean two months ago. F -He was in the Caribbean last month. 3. He wants to go to Australia on holiday. T 4. Guy and Lucy were self-employed three years ago. F -Three years ago Guy was a teacher, and Lucy worked in an office. 5. The Prime Minister came to their restaurant last month. F -The Prime Minister came to their restaurant last year. 6. Guy and Lucy are going to Peru next year. F -They might go to Peru next year.
I will then show them a transcript with portions using the present perfect underlined to exemplify the target of the lesson. While they listen to the audio one more time, I will ask the students to consider if Steve and Lucy are talking about the past, the present of the future in regards to the parts I have underlined. STEVE: I love being a self employed travel writer. I have been to about 40 countries, and I've been to some of the world's best hotels. I've written travel articles about lots of amazing places. Two weeks ago I went to Mexico, and last month I spent 5 days in the Caribbean. But I haven't been to Australia, that's one country I'd love to go to - but for a holiday, not for work. LUCY We've both had lot's of other jobs. Three years ago, guy was a teacher, and I worked in an office. But we'd rather be self employed, and we love having our own restaurant. We've met some really interesting people. Last year the prime minister had dinner here. But it's hard work, and guy and I have never had a vacation together. We might got to Peru next year, guy hasn't been to south America before.
I cover meaning form an pronunciation in my power point and check their knowledge with a google form. They will complete the form in break out rooms, and we will go over their answers as a class for open class feedback. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeefbMiJs9eFO4VFqzMuwTdfu3LZFBD2jAyvwBVzMFCyxNxeQ/viewform

Examples: work in a restaurant -I've worked in a restaurant. go to Canada - I haven't been to Canada. see a Japanese film stay in a five-star hotel cook a meal for someone's birthday work in an office lose something important We will regroup to discuss their responses. I will also give DEC.
