Procedure (39-45 minutes)
Provide slides suggesting a received/sent email, a party invite, and friends. Elicit Ss participation in response to the context of the (writing) lesson.
Display a sample email I have composed, inviting a friend to my party. Elicit Ss response regarding the main aim of my email/letter. Then, identify the structure of the email (salutation, Q invite, body, conclusion, and sign off).
Provide slides with the sections of the email: Salutations (Dear Sandra, Hi Sandra, Hey Sandra!) Intro (how are you?, hope you're having a good week) Invite (will you, can you, would you, are you..) Body (there will be food, music, drinks, pool, etc.,) Conclusion (let me know if...) Sign off (love, much love, big hugs) Then, ask Ss if they have Qs about the TL. Clarify/define as needed. Check understanding with ICQs: What are we writing? to whom? what information do we want?
After ICQs, Ss will compose an email invite and/or response, working individually for 5-6 mins. Then, BORs; Ss will be separated into groups/pairs (depending on the number of Ss) to edit one another's emails to check for errors, vocabulary, TL form, and email structure, e.g., does it have all categories of the model previously displayed? 5-6 mins. Time permitting, Ss will switch roles from friend/family having the party and the receiver of the invitation. 5-6 mins.
After BORs, Ss will be brought back to main class to discuss topic, give feedback, and ask general or specific Qs regarding the topic. 5 mins. DEC: provide visual of any mistakes noted during monitoring writing tasks on BORs, using google docs. Clarify, modify, correct errors. 5 mins
