Main Aims

  • Functional language - in a cafe

Subsidiary Aims

  • Listening and speaking

Procedure

warmer (4-5 minutes) • familiarize ss with asking about the price

I ask ss to choose one item they have and ask each other about the price of that item. demonstration should be provided to make this task understood

Lead in (4-5 minutes) • To prepare ss for the upcoming listening

I hand the ss the price list from their book and I ask them questions about the prices of some items on that list. For example, "How much is a coffee?" and "How much is an egg sandwich?" Then ss practice asking and answering using the list

First listening task (8-10 minutes) • Ss practice asking and answering about prices

At this stage I introduce the words "customer" and assistant" to the ss by showing them a real dialogue with the assistant at our school. Then, I show the ss the question in the question bubble "How much is an espresso and a croissant?" At this stage, I refer them to the price list and I ask them about the price using it. Once they provide the answer, I show them the answer bubble. I tell them they will listen to the dialogues and tick the customer's order and then they will know the prices. I may pause the recording at every dialogue so it can be done separately.

real life, in a cafe (10-12 minutes) • ss are introduced to real dialogue

i show ss some pictures for restaurants and cafes. i explain the words "take away" and "eat in" and drill those... i remind them again with customer and assistant... they do exercise 9 page 27 in Face to Face coursebook. Then I give them the same exercise cut on strips of paper and they have to put them to order. check the order in their handout. then start listening ex, 10 p. 27

Freer practice, role play (10-12 minutes) • students practice functional language more
