Procedure (31-45 minutes)
Contextualize the students into the lesson with a challenge: how many words can they memorize in five seconds? Students briefly catch a glimpse of a bunch of words on the screen; after five seconds, students are asked to type in the chatbox the words they remember. Teacher asks if they consider they have a good memory and introduces thereby a set of questions about their best/earliest/happiest memories. Students work in pairs/groups in Breakout Rooms for about four minutes to discuss.
Teacher introduces new vocabulary – four adjectives used to describe feelings: Thrilled /θrɪld/ Discouraged /dɪˈskɝː.ɪdʒd/ Frightened /ˈfraɪ.tənd/ Fulfilled /fʊlˈfɪld/ Meaning – students work either collaboratively or individually on a Google slide and match the adjectives with some definitions: Thrilled /θrɪld/ – Extremely happy about something Discouraged /dɪˈskɝː.ɪdʒd/ – Not having confidence or enthusiasm Frightened /ˈfraɪ.tənd/ – Feeling fear or worry Fulfilled /fʊlˈfɪld/ – Feeling happy because you are getting what you want from life Form – students work either collaboratively or individually on a Google slide and decide on the correct form of the adjectives (-ed or -ing suffix) to complete the sentences: 1. It was a thrilled/thrilling adventure – answer: thrilling. 2. I felt discouraging/discouraged by her comments – answer: discouraged. 3. Being a nurse is a difficult job, but it can be really fulfilling/fulfilled – answer: fulfilling 4. Traveling alone to another country is really frightening/frightened – answer: frightening Pronunciation – students work either collaboratively or individually on a Google slide and identify the number of syllables and stress of the adjectives: Oo frightened oO fulfilled oOo discouraged ooOo – O thrilled
Teacher introduces a listening exercise for gist – students listen to a man talking about a special weekend and decide which of the statements on the Google Form (previously sent through the chatbox) is not true according to the audio. Answer: They went to the theater and then ate an expensive five-course meal. They went to a shopping center.
Students listen to the audio a second time and decide what statements on the Google Form (previously sent through the chatbox) are true, false, or not given. Answers: 1. One of the most memorable moments in my life was a couple of years ago - true. 2. It all started one day when I was traveling around England - false. 3. I had absolutely no idea about the theater play - not given. 4. We didn't spend his money and decided to buy him a gift instead - false. 5. The next morning, we drove to a local shopping center - true. 6. One of my happiest memories was when I moved back to England - false. Students work in pairs/groups (Breakout Rooms) and compare their answers before the open class feedback. Teacher shows the answers on the screen for visual feedback.
Students read a short text about one of the questions they discussed at the beginning of the class. Teacher shows three questions on the screen and asks which one answers the text. Teacher emphasizes the importance of using adjectives when describing/talking about memories and then shows three more questions for students to discuss. Students work in pairs/groups (Breakout Rooms) before sharing some feedback in an open class fashion.
