To provide practice of language used for summarizing an article in the context of newspaper news articles.
Procedure (39-50 minutes)
T shows Ss a slide in Jamboard with a newspaper article, ask a Ss to read it and on the second slide asked them which one of the 5 options they think is the correct headline of the article.
T shares with the Ss a Jamboard with a news article about celebrity stalking and nominates 2 stidents to read. T would share a link for a google form and would tell Ss to answer it. Ss would have 5 minutes for this activity Possible ICQ´s What will the teacher share with you? (a Jamboard with a news article) What is the news article about? (celebrity stalking) How many students will read the article? (2) What will you do after reading the article? (answer a Google Form) How much time do you have for the activity? (5 minutes)
T shares a jamboard with Ss where the MFP of the words use on the questionnaire are
Using the functional language: This article is all about ... / describes how / Basically, what happened is ... The main point the article is making is that ... According to the article That appeared on the questionnaire T would explain MFP how they are pronounce and their entonation also using CCQ´s: What is the purpose of the phrase "This article is all about..."? What information does the phrase "Basically, what happened is..." provide? What is the main message of the article according to the phrase "The main point the article is making is that..."? What does the phrase "According to the article" indicate? What does the phrase "The article claims that..." suggest?
Students work in pairs or small groups to summarize a news article provided by T Ss will be divided in breakout rooms and will have a designated article to summarize They will have 6 minutes for the activity and then one representative form each group would tell us about their summary. Possible ICQ´s ICQs for this activity: 1. Are you going to work alone or in a group? - in a pair or small group 2. What are you going to do in the breakout room? - summarize a news article provided by the teacher 3. How much time will you have to complete the activity? - 6 minutes 4. Will one representative from each group share their summary with the class? - Yes
Teacher writes down examples of language overheard during breakout rooms. Teacher commends good language use, elicits reformulations, and elicits corrections from Ss for any mistakes.
