Main Aims

  • To provide practice of identifying, naming, locating, and counting groceries

Subsidiary Aims

Perhaps the most important element of any plan is the part where we say what our aims are.Jeremy Harmer in The Practice of English Language Teaching

Procedure

Warmer (5-7 minutes) • Vocabulary practice

Based on the shopping cart handout, ask students what foods they see.

Lead in (8-10 minutes) • Prepare for upcoming exercise (measure/container words)

Using the food category handout, split Ss into two groups to identify as many foods as possible from the word bank at the bottom of the page.

Review and measure (6-8 minutes) • Ss name foods to class using measure words

T introduce measure articles (some, a, an) and ask Ss to name back foods using appropriate article.

Vocab + question practice (18-20 minutes) • Ss practice functional language and previously learned prepositions

Ss each formulate a question using 3 elements: 1) W-question (which, what) 2) preposition from previous lesson (next to, near, under, on, beside, etc.) 3) new food vocabulary + measure word Ss ask and answer questions in the large group.

Listening comprehension (12-14 minutes) • Ss are exposed to real dialogue

Ss watch a video of a shopper asking for foods in a grocery store and are asked to practice pronunciation as they hear familiar words. T/Ss ask follow-up questions about scenario.

Break (15-15 minutes) • rest!

students get a 15-minute break.

Vocab - Containers (10-12 minutes) • Understand types of container measure words

Review containers and fill in blanks in handout as a group.

Controlled Practice (13-15 minutes) • Quantity: "much" vs "many" (tie to indefinite articles)

T explain concept of "how much" vs "how many" and give examples for context. Recall previous examples of countable items (a, an, some) and how they relate to "much" vs "many." Relate to container words. Optional: little/few. Ss each write two questions about quantity of foods.

Semi-Controlled practice (25-27 minutes) • Freer practice of vocab in PW

T choose 5 S-written questions for group ask -- lead in to semi-controlled practice. Ss pair up to practice asking and answering questions using all previous frameworks and handouts: 1) W- + preposition + food vocab 2) How much/many + food vocab 3) Container vocab + food vocab

CCQ / Controlled practice (12-14 minutes) • Review concepts covered

Asking questions using all previous frameworks introduced

Writing exercise (22-28 minutes) • Think of your favorite dish -- write the shopping list for its ingredients

Using all previously reviewed materials, Ss use shopping list template to write their own shopping list for their favorite meal. As a group, Ss share list of ingredients and others try to guess the dish they are making!

Free practice (8-12 minutes) • Open discussion with target language

Ss talk about what they will shop for this evening.
