-
Writing to practice the form of the time words ‘for’ and ‘since’.
Procedure (39-47 minutes)
I will ask students to read two sentences and to discuss the differences in meaning between them in pairs. I will ask some ICQs: Are you going to write the sentences? No. Are you going to discuss with me? No. Then I will show them the sentences on the w/b. After they finish I will elicit some answers from the students.
I will draw a timeline and show what ‘since’ and ‘for’ refer to in means of time. I will ask some CCQs: Is this the duration?, Is this the start point? Does it still exist?/ Does it exist now? After that there will be a drilling for pronunciation.
I will tell Ss to write ‘since’ or ‘for’ or ‘in’ in front of the time expressions on the HOs, and I will ask them to do it in pairs. When they finish, there will be a FB to see if they understand the meaning and use of the time words. I will ask questions ‘How do you know?’ or ‘Why is it since/for?’ to make sure that they understand the functions of the time words.
I will ask Ss to fill the gaps using the present perfect tense and ‘for’ / ‘since’, in pairs. I will ask them some ICQ questions; ‘Are you going to use past tense? No.’, ‘Are you going to do it in pairs? Yes’. I will distribute the HOs. When they finish there will be a short FB and CCQs such as; When did I start to live in this town? Ten years ago. Do I still live in this town? Yes.
I will ask Ss to fill the info-gap about a woman on the worksheet in pairs, and then write the same information about their own lives. I will distribute the HOS and when they finish I will re-group them, and ask them to speak about their sentences.
I will ask Ss to think of 3 (or 5) things that they started doing in the past, and continue to do, and write them down as sentences, after they finish their sentences I will ask them to walk around and talk with everyone and find the most interesting answer.
