To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency in the context of describing character.

Main Aims

  • To provide speaking practice in the form of descriptors of people both physcial and embodied.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of vocaburay useful for describing people.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will introduce them to today's topic which is describing people's characteristics. I will then have them describe a photo of a man I have selected. I will elicit the students to describe his face, his hair, his clothing, and how they think is personality might be.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Playing off of a different image of the same man, I will model for the students how to speak about / describe characteristics of a person. This will be a fill in the blank exercise, conducted as a class. Harvey is _______ (age). Harvey has ________ hair. Harvey wears a ________ ________. (color, style of clothing) Harvey seems like a _______. person. (description of attitude) They will have a word bank to fill in the blanks. OLD, YOUNG, BLACK, GREY, SUIT, T SHIRT, MEAN, FUNNY

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

I will conduct a similar exercise for the students to perform using an image of a woman, along with a list of vocabulary to help the students talk about the woman. VOCABULARY: YOUNG MIDDLE-AGED OLD TALL SHORT THIN SLIM FAT OVERWEIGHT BEAUTIFUL GOOD-LOOKING ATTRACTIVE WHITE BLACK BROWN BLUE / BROWN / GREEN EYES LONG / SHORT HAIR DARK / FAIR / BLONDE / GREY HAIR A BEARD, A MUSTACHE DOCTOR, SOCCER PLAYER, SCIENTIST, PROFESSOR, CARPENTER, BUS DRIVER, SINGER They will be introduced to the woman and the vocabulary on a slide. Form: subject + is + adjective. 
subject + has + adjective + noun. Subject + is a + noun. Pronunciation: Alice is tall. Alice has dark hair. We will go over their answers in open class feedback.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

I will perform the ask again two more times with different images. The first time will be using the sentence form as the prior, only with a different character. Feedback and Error Correction (4-6 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

I will conduct delayed error correction during this time for the activities they completed. If there is extra time, there is a bonus person for the students to describe.
