Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about To provide practice in reading for gist and detail in the context of low-tech solutions in some rural areas and some cities in different parts of the world.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of head nouns found in the reading (horse-drawn theatre, Bicycle-powered cinema, clean water supply)
  • To provide extended speaking fluency as students talk about these low-tech solutions and think about some other solutions for these problems

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce the topic of the class to students, by asking the following question: Do you like or dislike new technology or gadgets like, ebooks, tablets, or phones? Using G-slides. After that ask why they do and why they might not like them.

Pre-teach (5-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Meaning: Demonstrate activity using slides, Students will work in groups for 2 minutes and they should complete the sentences with the correct head noun. Answers: 1. When your power goes out you can hop on a bicycle-powered cinema and watch movies. 2. There is an increased risk of diseases and malnutrition without a clean water supply. 3 A campaign started to support the last horse-drawn theatre company in the United Kingdom After students have finished completing the sentences, confirm answers and ask students to say with their own words what are a horse-drawn theatre, bicycle-powered cinema, and clean water supply. Make notice that the head noun is the noun that gives the phrase meaning. Tell students to listen to the pronunciation and repeat

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show G-Form (Low tech solutions 1). Tell students they will read the text quickly and choose the correct option to fill in the gap they will have 3 to 4 min to read an answer. While-Reading/Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Show Students G-Form (Low tech solutions 2 - detail task). Tell Students they should read the article more carefully and answer the questions. Students will have 6 to 7 minutes to choose if true or false. 1. The Rural Academy uses horses and carriages to perform in rural areas. 2. Post- Reading/ listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be given a short time to talk about the following questions. What do you think about the solutions suggested in the article? Which Idea do you like the best? Students will go to breakout rooms to talk about these topics for 6 to 7 minutes, Teacher will try to monitor for some time each one of the breakout rooms, and right good examples of the use of the language and errors to post on G-slides 1.
