TP4 - Grammar: Second Conditional
Upper Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will be introduced to the second conditional using a text about imaginary/hypothetical situations in relation to the law. I will lead-in with a couple of questions regarding following/breaking the law, followed by a set of tasks from the textbook to expose the TL followed by OCFB. Then, we will go over a second task, in order to introduce/elicit the TL. I will go over MPF for language clarification and provide CCQs on the screen. After giving feedback/answer key, I will proceed to CP (individualized and later in groups) using BORs. Once we've gone over an OCFB, students will have the opportunity to participate in freer practice using the TL fluently by completing a communicative task while in BORs. I will end the presentation with an open-class discussion related to the topic.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice the second conditional; alternatives to IF

Subsidiary Aims

  • Fluency of the TL

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Begin class with an open-class discussion related to the topic of the lesson, by asking 1-2 Qs on the screen. 1- Have you ever broken a traffic law? How often? 2- How law-abiding are you?

Exposure/Text-work (2-3 minutes) • To provide context / gist task that exposes Ss to the TL through a text

Use the text on pg. 24, Ex 3a to expose learners to the TL, practicing speed reading, followed by OCFB.

Highlighting Target Language (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Provide a task (using the TL from the text on pg.24-25, & 133) to introduce and elicit the TL; students will attempt to define/apply the TL using what they see on the slides (images & text related to the topic/grammar). This task will be followed by an answer key for students to see.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Cover meaning, form, and pronunciation of the target language, using a task from pg. 25 Ex 4 and pg.133. Ask students if they have any questions about the questions on the task, while using the presentation slides, and handouts provided through google forms/chat box. This will be followed by an answer key.

Controlled Practice (9-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Provide students with a controlled practice task (Ex 5) using the TL. Ask students if they have any questions regarding the questions on Google Forms task (to be completed individually).

Semi-Controlled Practice (9-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

After completing the CP task (Ex 5) individually, students will be grouped/paired in BORs before opening class discussion/feedback, with an answer key.

Free Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be instructed to complete a communicative task (from Ex 6) in order to provide them with the opportunity to use the TL fluently, while using BORs. Students will be asked if they have any questions about the questions. I will follow with the answer key. Finally, the lesson will end conducting feedback related to the topic. (DEC).
