Main Aims
-
To provide practice in making suggestions and decisions in the context of organizing a meal for friends
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide review of food in the context of planning a menu
Procedure (45-59 minutes)
send students the link to a jamboard. Students have to correspond the meals to the different parts of the menu (appetizers-entrees-desserts). Check. Ask two students what food they like from the menu.
Give students the list of food and the table with the different types of food. Divide the class into groups of three. Ask them to classify the food into the categories given in the table. Check answers.
In the same groups, explain task 1 to students. They will have to use the words in the pre-task to plan a menu for the friends given. They should make sure everyone is offered a choice of two appetizers, two entrées and two desserts.
Tell students that they will now present their ideas to the rest of the class. They have to decide who will be in charge of explaining each course of the menu: A. appetizers, B. entrées, C. desserts. They have to prepare and rehearse what they will say and follow the instructions in the explanations.
Students in turns report what they planned in their groups, while the rest of the class listen and take notes.
Tell students they will listen to a group of students discussing what they have just done. They listen, and pay attention to the language they use, so they can find differences or similarities between what they said and what the people in the recording said. Elicit answers. Show the script on the screen. Highlight the useful language and model pronunciation.
Task 2.Group students again in different groups. They have to decide on two who cannot attend and prepare a menu for the remaining four friends. Tell them that this time they can add more ingredients that are not in the list given. Follow the same procedure of planning, presenting and rounding up with clarification of any language/pronunciation aspects that may have come up during the planning and presentation stages.
