C1 level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide process and product writing practice of a report in the context of bar graph and line graph
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide clarification and practice of comparison, addition and contrast in the context of bar graph and line graph
Procedure (93-132 minutes)
The student is introduced to the concept of report writing in IELTS and how to describe a chart and point out details and make comparisons when necessary. He is given information on the time limit of the task and the required number of words to achieve the task.
The student reads sample descriptions of bar graph and line graph from the website mentioned as the source and discusses language use of comparison, addition and contrast with the teacher learning how and when to use each.
The student is provided a webpage containing useful language on how to introduce a chart, how to give overall view and how to make the required comparisons on different sets of data provided by the chart. He then proceeds to practice making sentences with the given language chunks under the supervision of the teacher in order to make sure he learns how to make use of the proper language.
Having practiced making accurate sentences in introducing a chart, giving and overview and making comparisons, the student proceeds to write two separate reports, one describing a bar graph and the other a line graph. The student is given 20 minutes to complete his report as per the actual IELTS exam conditions. He does these two tasks using google docs so the teacher can have access to his writing with relative ease to make corrections at the end of the time period.
The student's writing is analyzed by the teacher pointing out the possible errors in structure, spelling and punctuation. It is expected for the student to have some difficulty with punctuation since the topic has not been covered yet but the teacher provides general guidelines on punctuation for now and later there will be a full lesson on the subject.
