To provide product writing practice of a dialogue using must, mustn't and needn't.
Procedure (45-57 minutes)
On w/b T puts pictures of certain rules any student must follow in a classroom and asks Ss what words come to mind. In this way T elicits meaning of modal verbs must and mustn't. Eg. You ______sleep in class. Then T presents another set of pictures to elicit needn't. Eg. A picture of a big plate with food. " If you ate all of this you __________ eat more".
T sets the context for TL by dividing Ss in two groups. One group receives a set of cards (or sheets) with sentences stating facts. The other group gets sentences where modals mustn't and needn't are used. Class is arranged in a way in which both groups face each other. Ss don't look at their respective cards until T tells them. When is time, both groups look at their cards and show them to the other group. Every Ss needs to find his/her partner in the other group -the student with the sentence stating the fact that matches finds the student that has the sentence with the corresponding modal verb . Eg. S1 has the card with the sentence "You are driving a car"---- S2 has the card with the sentence: "You mustn't talk on the mobile phone".
Clarification is done in the way showed in the Language Analysis. See attachment. Drilling phrases
Ss are a given handout with tips about the correct usage of must-mustn't and needn't. Below, there is an exercise consisting of 5 sentences to be rewritten using words that appear in brackets. The second ex. for controlled practice is a fill in the gaps activity in which ss have to use words given as options to complete sentences. After they finish, they check with their partners and w/c feed back is taken w/c.
Ss do a task in which they have to write responsive sentences according any given situation. Eg-- Given sentence: I have a very important exam tomorrow. Answer sentence: I must study for the exam. Pairwork Feedback, W/C FB.
As a free practice, Ss are asked to imagine they are the Major of Istanbul and design (write) a poster. An example will be showed.
