Teaching Practice 8 - 14 April 2023
Elementary level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about writing an email of complaints in the context of online purchases.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide process and product writing practice of a formal email in the context of complaining about an online purchase

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of language used for complaining in the context of formal written communication

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

On the Jamboard (one slide per 2 ss if BORs can be used, otherwise do this in plenary) - ss see a bunch of sentences to be arranged in two columns. One column is described by a happy face and one by an upse face - as ss to read sentences and decides whether they were written by happy or unhappy customers and drag each sentence under the corresponding column. Check with whole class.

Exposure - reading (5-8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Open up the text and show students two emails next to each other. Ask them to read each of them and answer the gist task question: "what is the difference between the two emails?" Give them about 3 minutes and elicit answer in plenary after reading: the two emails express exactly the same idea but sample 1 is written in formal English. Tell ss we will focus on writing an email of complaint in formal English.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Continue working on the Google doc. Bring attention to page 2, where there are a few useful chunks extrapolated from the text. In plenary, elicit possible ways to complete the sentences. Focus on the fact that all these expressions can be simply followed by a NP or, if they wish to elaborate more, by a full clause. Complete the first one together, the give a similar activity to be completed in pairs in BORs (Google doc - TP82 worksheet 1: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SujCry_9PET5Ol52W8jKqKLnmWAwHU19l7GjQBae4pY/edit) Check in plenary

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Use Google doc - TP8- writing task (one copy for each student) to provide individual writing practice. Ask ss to read the prompt, go over it together and point out that the model email is at the top of the page if they need inspiration. Give them 15 minutes to write their own email and monitor closely to provide help if needed. Ss can be placed in individual BORs if needed. Allow up to 5 mins to set up the task.
