Description

This lesson will focus on listening and vocabulary in the context of computer problems. The lesson will start with a discussion about the good and bad points about computer. There will then be a vocabulary / crossword stage in preparation for the listening stages. The two listening stages will require Ss to listen for gist and then for detail. This will be followed by a free speaking exercise.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, inference and specific information listening practice using a text about problems with computers in the context of computer and technology.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of problems with computers in the context of computers and technology.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of problems with computers.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • Set the context of computers.

Show Ss picture of one of the first computers and Alan Turing. Explain the story and ask Ss to discuss the good and bad points of computers. Get Ss to write some ideas on the WB.

Pre-Listening Crossword (10-12 minutes) • To provide Ss with the vocabulary and introduce meaning needed for the listening stages.

Provide Ss with crossword HO. Tell Ss to work in pairs and complete the puzzle monitor and provide assistance if required. Get Ss to write answers on WB Drill pronunciation chorally and individually.

While-Listening (listening for gist) (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening task to gain an overview of the text.

Tell Ss about my problems with computer to set the context of the text. Explain that we are going to listen to people talking about computer problems. Ss will listen to five conversations about computer problems. Tell Ss to listen to what the conversations are about and label the topics in the order they hear the conversations. Ask SS to check answers in pairs. Ask Ss for answers. If they have struggled replay text and redo FB

While-Listening for detail. (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening task.

This time they will be answering the next questions on the listening HO. Ss will have to answer more specific questions relating to the conversations. Play the conversations a couple of times and monitor Ss progress with the task. Once Ss have appeared to have attempted the questions get them to check in pairs. Ask Ss to provide answers to T. In FB establish how Ss have come to their answers. If Ss have been unable to hear the conversations correctly attempt to elicit correct answers and play the text again (if necessary).

speaking for fluency (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask Ss to mingle and discuss: The problems they have had with computer. Would they like to learn more about computers? Why? Provide Ss with delayed feedback.
