Main Aims

By the end of the lesson students will have had clarification on the meaning, form and pronunciation of the Past Modals in the context of the Nazca Lines. Also, they will have the opportunity to practice in controlled way as well as in a production exercise.

Students should review and attain confidence with irregular past participles
Procedure (33-44 minutes)
T will show some pictures to students of the Nazca Lines and ask some questions: - Do you know what are they? - Where are they located? - Why were they built? Is it 100% sure? After the questions, T will speculate the Nazca Lines in 3 sentences.
T will show a text to Ss, and give them 4 sentences to clasify in T (true) and F (false) they will have 4 minutes for reading and clasify the sentences, after that Ss will be sent to BoRs to compare their answers.
T will ask students to find 3 modal verbs in the text and ask the following questions: - What are they used for? (should for advices, could for possibilities and musty for necessary things) - What word follows modal verbs? (infinitives) - Do this structure of modal verbs work for the past or the present (present)
T will ask students: - What about the past? How do we speculate about the past using these modal verbs? - Ss will be asked to find 3 sentences in the text and ask the following questions: The meaning is the same than in the present? (yes, should for advices, could for possibilities and must for necessary things) What word comes after the modals in the past? (have) And after have? (past particple) T will elicit pronunciation by reading sentences and make students repeat.
T will show sentences using the modals in the present and students will have to rewrite the sentences in the past in BoRs
T will use Padlet to put 5 situations, students will choose 3 and write 3 speculations using the modals in the past.
T will select some mistakes or things to clarify and tackle them
