Main Aims

  • To provide reading for gist and detail practice in the context of a story

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of vocabulary words in the context of short story
  • To provide writing practice of a diary entry in the context of a story

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask Ss to listen to the song and ask them: "Do you think Delilah is a person or a cat? How do you know?" Tell them to discuss in pairs and then tell the class what they think.

Pre-Reading (4-5 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show them the picture of a rabbit, tell them to describe it (elicit some vocabulary). Ask them to discuss in pairs if they have ever considered owning a rabbit as a pet, and what could be the advantages and disadvantages of having a rabbit as a pet. Ask students if the people in their families like surprises. How would they react if the students brought home a pet one day as a surprise?

While-Reading #1 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Tell the Ss to read the text silently and answer the questions that follow (SECTION A) Then they can check their answers in pairs and tell the answers.

While-Reading #2 (12-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks

Ask students to read the story more carefully this time and answer the questions. (SECTIONS B, C and D) Then they can check their answers in pairs and share them with the class.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Tell them "Imagine you are the mother in the story. Write a diary entry."
