Description

In this lesson, Ss learn about the present perfect tense, and three main ways we use it. They will practice forming questions using the present perfect and drill the meaning, form and pronunciation.

Materials

No materials added to this plan yet.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the present perfect in the context of life experiences, recent events and long-term situations.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide Ss with conversational practice using present perfect questions to ask about other people's experiences.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by showing Ss four photos with four statements about my experiences - two true, and two false. They will have to guess which are which.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Ss will be given 2 minutes to read a short text describing a person's life experiences, places they have visited, things they have done recently and people they've known. As a whole class, we will then answer three true/false gist questions.

Highlighting (3-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will show Ss three slides, one focused on life experiences, one on recent events that influence the present, and one on past to present life facts. I will briefly highlight what they mean.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will show Ss the form and structure of the present perfect, in question and negative form. I will also highlight how 'ever/never', 'just/already' and 'how long/since' are commonly used with the three main uses of present perfect we will be covering.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss will be given 4 minutes to complete a dropdown selection task on Google forms, which they will do in pairs or small groups in BORs. I will then conduct brief OCFB.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will be put into BORs in small groups and told to interview their partner, to find out two life experiences they've had, two recent events and two things they have liked or done since they were children. Time allowing, I will conduct OCFB.
