Writing a cover letter
Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide product writing practice of a cover letter in the context of job
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide detailed reading practice using a text about a cover letter for a job to later infer back to it.
Procedure (28-36 minutes)
Show Ss a picture of asking ''what is your dream job and why?'' then ask Ss to discuss the answers in pairs
I start the pre-teach vocab containing 5 words, each word will be presented on the PPP as a picture and let Ss guess the word then the next slide contains the word, the type of the word (adj or n.) and the English meaning of the word. After eliciting the word and its meaning from them, I will start drilling with Ss. After that stage, I allow Ss to read the letter in SB P.56 and arrange the sequence of the cover letter accordingly individually and in pairs.
Draw Ss attention to some of the language features used in writing a cover letter by introducing what set phrases, no contractions and formal vocabulary are in the sample cover letter of the HO.
Allow Ss to write their own version of a cover letter for their dream job that they discussed previously in the lead-in using the cover letter in the book as a reference while I monitor them and let them stick it on the wall of the class after writing, then comes the part where Ss decide which written cover letter on the wall should win the job opportunity from their POV.
