Vocabulary -ed/ing adjectives
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about adjectives ending in -ed and -ing. The lesson starts with a listening task about whether or not the speakers agree with the statements in exercise 1 (that the students will discuss in the lead in). Afterwards, the students will listen to the audio again and this time they're going to choose which of these adjectives in exercise 3 the speakers used. This will be followed by language clarification through: visuals and a matching exercise (meaning), then I'm going to elicit the form from the students and write it on the board (form) and finally drilling (pronunciation). The students will then do the controlled practice in pairs and the freer practice in groups to discuss the sentences using the adjectives they learnt.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of adjectives ending in -ed/ing in the context of media

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction in the context of media
  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a discussion in the context of media

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will display the sentences in Exercise 1 on the PowerPoint presentation and give them 30 seconds to read the statements. Then the Ss will discuss their opinions on these statements, whether they agree or not and why. After that, I will ask them about their partners' answers.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Listening Task: Exercise 2: The Ss will quickly read the statements in exercise 1 and then they'll listen to the audio track to see if the speakers agree with the statements or not. An answer key will be provided.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Exercise 3: The Ss will use the tapescript to determine which adjectives from the box the speakers used. An answer key will be provided afterwards.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: For most of the adjectives, visual aids will be provided to clarify the difference in meaning between the adjectives that end in -ed and -ing. For the rest of the adjectives, the Ss will do a matching exercise in pairs. CCQs will then be provided for further clarification. Form: I will elicit the form from the students, then write it on the board. Pronunciation: I will drill the adjectives first, and then add them in sentences and drill these sentences. Writing: The Ss will choose 2 adjectives, one ending in -ed and the other in -ing (e.g. excited - exciting) and write two sentences. o/c feedback.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The Ss will work in pairs/groups to do Practice Exercise 1. An answer key will be provided once they're done.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The Ss will work in pairs/groups to discuss how they would feel in the situations in Practice Exercise 2 using the adjectives they learnt. They will then switch partners and discuss once again. Content and language feedback will follow.
