Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Me and My Career in the context of the Life of a Foreign Correspondent.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a interview in the context of the life of a foreign correspondent.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- The teacher shows the students a video/pictures of some foreign correspondents while at work to elicit the qualities that a foreign correspondent should have.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

- To pre-teach blocking vocabulary, the teacher puts the students into two groups and tells them that he is going to say the meanings of some words which are in the text, and their job is to try to find that word faster than the other group in order to get a point. - The teacher asks ICQs to make sure the students got the instructions. - The teacher models and drills the words and asks CCQs if needed.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

- The teacher tells the students that they will start reading the extracts from the interview, but they will read it fast and try to match the questions with the answers. - The teacher gives them a time limit. - When time is over, the teacher puts the students in pairs to check the answers together. - The teacher does a whole class feedback.

While-Reading #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging reading task

- The asks the students to read the text again and try to find where exactly in the text they can find specific information. - The teacher gives them a time limit. - When time is over, the teacher puts the students in pairs to check the answers together. - The teacher does a whole class feedback.

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

- The teacher divides the class into two halves (eyewitnesses and reporters). - The teacher tells the students that the eyewitnesses should tell the reporters an interesting/important news event that they saw (or they can come up with one) and that the reporters need to prepare questions to interview the eyewitnesses about what they saw. (if there is time,the students switch roles). - The teacher puts the students in pairs (an eyewitness with a reporter). - Finally, the teacher elicits or gives feedback either on the content or the performance of the activity. The teacher gives feedback on the language that students used in the activity and might highlight and correct mistakes that the students made during the activity.
