TP4 - Count nouns and non-count nouns

Description

In this lesson, students will learn about the use of count nouns and non-count nouns through a reading text in the context of natural features and places. They will go through the meaning, form and pronunciation before doing controlled and freer practise with the target language.

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson, students will have had clarification on the meaning, form and pronunciation of countable nouns and non-countable nouns in the context of natureal features and places. Also, they will have the opportunity to practice in controlled way as well as in a freer exercise.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Give students the opportunity to practice in asking questions related to countable nouns and non-countable nouns.
  • Revise vocabulary related to natural features and places.
  • To develop students' skills of listening for gist and detail.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher will play "memory" with students, This game is going to be played with 12 cards, 6 with pictures and 6 with the names of the pictures. Ss find the matching pictures and names and the teacher then clasify the pairs in 2 groups "natural features" and "places in a city". After that, teacher will show more words for students to clasify.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Students will listen to a podcast individually, they are going to be asked to answer two questions: Where is she? and Where is the place? Teacher will assign students to answer and confirm (or disagree) in each question. Students will listen to the podcast for a second time and they will answer 5 questions, if it is necessary the audio can be reproduced for a third time. Teacher will assign students to answer the questions. (one each depending on the number of students) Questions: 1. What is the name of the podcast? 2. Are there any tall trees? 3. Are there a lot of interesting animals? 4. Are there a lot of buildings? 5. Check the items that Yasmin mention.

Language Analysis (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

The teacher will conduct MFP using CCQs for meaning. Meaning: - CCQ1: Nouns are words that represent... (ask students to complete) they may need some follow up examples. Espected answers: people, places and things. - CCQ2What's is the difference between coun nouns and non-countable nouns. Espected answer: count nouns can be counted (have a singular and plural form) and non-count nouns cannot be counted. - The teacher will give examples from the vocabulary worked in the lead-in. Form: - The teacher will give two examples: I like this restaurant. / This restaurant is great. CCQs: In the first sentence, the noun restaurant is the subject or the object. And in the second? - The teacher will give more examples in a table and will highlight the articles that go with the nouns. And ask questions about the quantity they express. Pronunciation - In this stage I'll focus in two things: + Common stress in the first syllable in nouns + Plural nouns /s/, /z/, /iz/

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The controlled practice is divided in two exercises. Exercise 3b from page 57 and exercise 6.2 of page 134 of the book provided. Students answer individually for 2 minutes and then compare in Breakout rooms for 3 minutes. At the end we share answers with the whole class.

Freer practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will be asked to think about their current favorite place (a beach, a park, a forest, countryside, a museum, mall, etc.) and comment about the place with their parners. The following questions may help students to guide their descriptions. - What is the place? - What things can you see? Animals? people? - Stores, restaurants, etc.

Language Feedback (2-4 minutes) • To provide the class with feedback on any mistakes made during the freer practise activity

The teacher will monitor students during the freer practice activity and provide general feedback at the end of the class.
