Main Aims

  • To provide practice and review of should have + wish in the context of money-making scheme

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of should have in the context of Ideas that didn't work when trying to make a little extra cash

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Introduce the lesson by asking the following questions: a. Would you like to make some extra cash? b. What some ways of making some extra cash in your country?

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

1. Have the students read the article and determine which is the best way to make some extra cash and which is the worst way using an open class feedback.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

1. Have the students work in an open class to match the speech bubbles to the people in the the pictures. 2. Show the correct answers.

Clarification (8-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1. Introduce the topic: Wishes and should have 2. Explain the following: We often use wish + Past Perfect to make wishes about the past. We use them to express regret and are often the opposite of what really happened. 3. Provide the following examples. a. Last night I didn't sleep enough because I was watching a movie. I wish I hadn't watched a movie. b. Sarah didn't pass her exam because she didn't study. Now she wishes she had studied. 4. Explain the following: We can also use should/shouldn't have + past participle to talk about regrets in the past. a. I was really nervous about my first class. I shouldn't have worried too much about it. b. Jack and Evelyn didn't buy the tickets before the concert day, so they had to stand in line for 3 hours. They should have bought the tickets before the concert day. 5. Ask a student if he/she can change the following example using should/shouldn't have + past participle. a. Last night I didn't sleep enough because I was watching a movie. I wish I hadn't watched a movie. (I shouldn't have watched a movie) b. Sarah didn't pass her exam because she didn't study. Now she wishes she had studied. (she should have studied) 6. Ask another student if he can change the following example using wish + past perfect. a. I was really nervous about my first class. I shouldn't have worried too much about it. (I wish I hadn't worried too much about it) b. Jack and Evelyn didn't buy the tickets before the concert day, so they had to stand in line for 3 hours. They should have bought the tickets before the concert day. (They wish they had bought the tickets before the concert day)

Controlled Practice (8-11 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1. Introduce the activity to be completed and explain the directions. 2. Ask the students read it ask them if they have any questions. 3. Do the first one together. 4. Send the link to the students and give them 5 minutes to complete it. Tell the students not to click submit. 5. Send the students to breakrooms in order to check answers. 6. Show the answers and ask them if they have any questions about the answers.

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1. Have the students work in groups to talk about things they regret and the conquences they suffered. 4 minutes for this activity. 2. I will give them one example. 3. Conduct a feedback to find out what they dicussed about and DEC.
