Present Perfect Continuous with for, since and ago
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the Present Perfect Continuous and the different usages of for, since and ago. The lesson starts with a listening task about Sarah’s Life and it’s followed by an exercise where the Ss complete a number of sentences using the tapescript. This is followed by explaining the Present Perfect Continuous using two examples, CCQs, discriminating between ‘since’ and ‘for’ and some exercises. Afterwards, there is a brief explanation for ‘ago’. Finally, there is a controlled practice and a free practice where they would create a mini-lifeline and describe it to their partners.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Present Perfect Continuous in the context of Life Events

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Past Simple (ago) and Present Perfect Simple in the context of Life Events

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

By showing pictures of Sarah's life and letting the students speculate what these pictures mean.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Listening Task

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Have the Ss work in pairs to answer this grammar exercise which will be an introduction to the target of the lesson and also a base for other exercises. Provide an answer key.

Clarification (15-20 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will start by giving two examples and CCQs. After that I will provide the form and a comparison table ('for' and 'since'). There will be a 4-sentence exercise the T and Ss will do together (negative checking). We will go through the exercises in the Analysis box quickly and then briefly explain the usage of 'for' with the Past Simple and the Present Perfect (using examples from exercise 2, page 40).

Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will give instructions and answer the first sentence with the Ss and then have them work in pairs to answer a and b only (they will not be answering the whole exercise) and provide an answer key once they're done.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The Ss will create a mini-lifeline for themselves using 4 sentences only and describe it to their partners. Feedback.
