Reading for gist and fluency speaking using the vocabulary related to business and trade to talk about themselves.
Procedure (40-45 minutes)
Have Ss talk about 1 question related to China, which is the topic of the text. What do you know about China? Give a model answer first. ( Shanghai is one of the biggest cities in the world. It has a population of 27 million people)
Tell students they are going to read a text about China. Ask Ss to read the article and find three ways in which Shanghai has changed since 1990 (allow 3 min). Share HO1 in the chat. (Source: face2face upper intermediate SB page 58 ex. 2) Conduct OCFB
Tell student you are going to work with the words that appeared in blue in the text. In slides 3, 4 and 5 work on MFP of each word. Remember to model and drill pronunciation first, as a group and the individually. For each word focus on: • What does it mean? • What type of word is it, e.g, adverb, adjective, verb etc? • Where is the word typically placed in a sentence? • What sounds in the word the word might be difficult for students? • Which part of the word is stressed? In slide 6 show students instructions of Google forms activity and complete the 1st one as an example. Send google forms link (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1uDAvlYOsUvjMBABf1E8PepNdNhqFCjLj4erQuJfx2q0/edit) in the chat. Ask students to work individually for 3 minutes. Send students to BORs in pairs or groups of 3. Allow 3 minutes. Show answers in slide 7. Conduct OCFB
Tell student they ate going to work together in BORs to discuss which of the sentences in the previous activity are true for them and to ask each other follow up questions. Send HO2. Put them in BORs. Allow 4 min. Conduct OCFB and DEC.
