ELA/ART Butterflies Lesson
Grade 1/2 level

Description

The purpose of this lesson is for students to make a butterfly while learning the anatomy of a butterfly. This will be done by, “building” a butterfly part by part with construction paper. Students will have been introduced to the butterfly body parts in a previous lesson. But before constructing our butterfly, I will review the body parts with the class, while writing the body parts on the white board. Once this is complete, students will be able to demonstrate their understanding of the body parts by constructing their own butterfly, using all six body parts (wings, antennae, eyes, thorax, abdomen, legs) and placing them in the correct locations on their butterfly.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet Students! and activate prior knowledge from previous class by engaging students in c class discussion asking "Which butterfly body parts did we look at? Can you name them?" Teacher will write out answers on white board.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students can use their worksheets that they completed last lesson with the labels of the body parts of the butterfly as a reference, if they need help with figuring out the different body parts of the butterfly and where its location is.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

instruct students that they will be, “building” their very own butterfly, part by part. By providing visual directions such as the teacher demonstrating or modelling EAL students are able to follow along and understand what is expected of them. I

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Instruct students that they will be able to pick two colours of construction paper for their body parts, and that they need to label their butterfly body parts. Students will then go to their desks and start drawing and cutting out butterfly body parts.
