Mongolia - Reading lesson
Upper-intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students will develop their reading skills through gist and specific details tasks in the context of Mongolia. The students will start by brainstorming what they already know about Mongolia. Then they will be given 90 seconds to skim read for gist to find out what the author says is the hardest thing about living in Mongolia, and afterwards they will briefly share their responses in open class feedback. Next, they will be given 8 minutes to read the text individually and answer multiple choice and short answer questions; they will then check their answers in small groups. Finally, they will be put into pairs and practise their productive skills by discussing related questions and if they have time, writing one or two sentence responses.

Materials

Abc face2face Upper Intermediate Student's book

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about living in Mongolia.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide conversational practice in a discussion about differences between Ss home country and Mongolia, and countries Ss would like to visit; to provide writing practice by producing one or two sentences in response to these questions.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by telling students I am used to teaching one-on-one, but need to get used to teaching groups - and check that they understand what I mean, in order to clarify the grammar used in the text. Then I will show students several photographs typically associated with Mongolia, and ask them to brainstorm as a class to come up with any ideas they already have about Mongolia.

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will explain the following vocabulary: nomadic, withstand, ferment and acquired taste, using photos and examples. Ss will exercise their reading skills by reading the examples.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (2-4 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

I will give students 90 seconds to skim read the text and answer the question, "What does the author think are the hardest things about living in Mongolia?". If they are familiar enough with the 'get used to' and 'be used to' structures this should not be too difficult. Then I will show Ss the relevant part of the text which has the answers in and conduct open class feedback.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

I will give Ss 8 minutes to read the text individually and answer the questions on the Google form. I will then put them into groups to share their answers. I will make sure I tell them to 'check accuracy' so they can see the correct responses, so open class feedback should hopefully be very brief.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-14 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In pairs Ss will discuss two questions and write one or two sentences. I will then conduct open class feedback.
