Relative Clauses
Upper Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of relative clauses in the context of holidays
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of favorite things
Procedure (35-47 minutes)
Ask what their favorite holiday is? Maybe follow up with a why, to mirror the free practice.
Breakout groups to peer check the answers to a forms based fill-in the blank. The form asks students to use a word bank to complete a portion of text using relative clauses. I will have to review here if they are not getting it, and go over some answers.
Focus on the word bank we used. What do the bank items have in common. Look at the pronouns and assign them to their proper category.
What is a relative clause exactly? Define it. Look at defining vs non-defining relative clauses. Following this, use non-defining relative clause to practice intonation in the context of commas.
Students will independently use a google form to combine sentences using non-defining relative clauses.
Students will use a guided framework to talk to each other about things that are important to them in breakout rooms. They will attempt to use relative clauses in their self-description. Afterwards, students will share with their class what they learned about their partner.
