Teaching Practice 4 - 24 Feb 2023
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson students learn about real conditionals (zero and 1st) through a listening text about anger management.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of real conditionals in the context of mental health

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about anger management in the context of mental health

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. On Google doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1e6ksLlEOWtAsF05nEnELi6d9utsUvb1l8P79qJfLzaw/edit show pictures of different types of therapy and the definition of therapy - elicit names of the types of therapy shown in the pictures and ask ss if they know of other types of therapy. Also ask why people go to therapy and try to elicit "anger management" or "anger issues" - type their contributions on the shared Google doc. Explain that we will listen to part of a radio program that discusses anger management and possible therapies for it.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- Play the recording and keep the Google doc with their contributions visible on the screen so they can remember what they're checking for. - Conduct a quick feedback to confirm whether their predictions were correct. - Direct students to Google Form TP4-1 and explain that they will look at sentences extracted form the audio and will have to state whether these sentences refer to a general situation (GS) or future situations (FS).

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- Students complete activity on Google Form TP4-1 - OCFB

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Bring ss back to the Google doc where sentences from the Google form are grouped in GSs and FSs. For GSs, point out: Meaning: this structure is used to describe situations that are always true / scientific truths / habits 1. Structure: subordinators if/when + simple present in both clauses 2. clauses can be switched - use of comma To check understanding: ask ss to complete "my boss gets angry if..." For FSs, pint out: 1. Structure: subordinators if/when + simple present in sub clause + simple future in main clause 2. clauses can be switched - use of comma 3. Pron - weak forms /aɪəl/ and /wɪəl/ 4. Listening activity on Google Form TP4-2 (adapted from 5A in textbook) - get students to repeat a few times to drill correct pron To check understanding: ask ss to complete "if you don't calm down, ..."

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Cloze activity on wordwall: https://wordwall.net/resource/53068708 (adapted from 7A in textbook) - fill the gap in conditional sentences with the correct form of the verb (simple present or simple future) Get ss to do it individually, check OCFB

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Wordwall speaking wheel: https://wordwall.net/resource/53068966/complete-the-sentences-so-that-they-are-true-for-you Ss do activity in pairs in BORs - Activity: spin the wheel and complete the sentences so that they are true for you (adapted from 7B in textbook) Monitor and note errors for DEC
