Main Aims

  • The main aim of this lesson is developing the receptive skill - listening, through completing the various activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • The sub aim will include learning the new vocabulary and practicing speaking skills.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In the beginning of a lesson, the students are given a paper with 3 questions about shopping: When was the last time you went shopping? What did you buy? Did you like what you bought? The students work in pairs and ask each other and then give their answers. This is done to create their interest into the topic, and asking the students about their shopping experience is an example of personalisation.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • Pre-teach vocabulary that is essential for the understanding

In this part of a lessn, we will work on some vocabulary. I chose: 1. window-shopping; 2. shoplifter; 3. corner-shop; 4. high street shopping; 5. addict; 6. frustrated; 7. stationery; I will try to elicit some words from them first, f.e. the word corner-shop and high-street shopping. For the other words I will use definition, example and realia.

Pre-Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with opportunity to use the vocabulary they were introduced

In this stage, the students are divided into three groups and given a matching activity. I will give them cut-ups with three categories: 1. people, 2. types of shopping, 3. places to go shopping and ask to put the words under the correct section. After they finish, they go around and check other groups. And we can also do whole class check.

While-Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging listening task

First, they students are told that they are going to listen to an interview with a shopaholic. They are given 10 questions and they have to quickly go over them, and then listen and cross out the questions from the above list which aren't asked.

While-Listening #2 (7-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging listening task

After we found the questions that aren't asked, I ask students to look at the exercise again, then we listen for the second time, so the students are able to answer those questions from memory. They are given a paper where they write their answers and they check each other sitting in pairs.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

After the students have listened to the interview for several times and did the activities, they will work in pairs and do a role-play activity. They are asked to make a short conversation between Katy and one of her friends who wants to give her some advice about her shopping addiction.
