Phrasal verbs - clothes
B1 - pre- intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students will practice and learn about phrasal verbs while working in groups. Students will be given several tasks to help them understand the meaning of some phrasal verbs and learn new ones. The lesson begins with a warm-up activity, where students watch a video and then reflect. This will set up the lesson and allow us to move on to the next task, where I'll show photos, and students will choose the phrasal verb required to describe the activity. After eliciting and drilling, students will try to create their own sentences using learned phrasal verbs.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a description of general activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will watch a scene, be divided into two groups, and be asked to guess what the video is about, recall the phrasal verbs from the video, and guess their meaning. The students will then report what they came up with as a group.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

The teacher draws students' attention to one of the sentences of a previous activity with a phrasal verb. The teacher explains what a phrasal verb is. Students work in pairs to find more phrasal verbs in the example sentences. The teacher asked if students could give more examples of phrasal verbs.

Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students are given a worksheet consisting of sentence cards and phrasal verb definitions. Students work in pairs and try to find phrasal verbs and then match them with their definitions. At the end, the teacher shows the answers on a board so that students can check their answers.

Planning (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to plan students' reports

Students read a text containing phrasal verbs, try to find the phrasal words, and understand the meaning using context. Then students listen to a recording of the exact text, complete the questions individually, and check their answers in pairs. The teacher elicits the answers from the students.

Report (6-8 minutes) • To allow students to report on how they did the task and how it went

Students work in pairs. They ask and answer and try to recall the phrasal verbs they read and listened to. They may come up with sentences to clarify the meaning.

Language Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

Students will find the new sentences of the phrasal verbs they've come up with.
