Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of reported speech in the context of friends and families conversations in the past

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of making excuses

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context about direct and reported speech and engage students to tell about other's spoken words

In this stage, I'll start to talk about my conversation with my friend in the past , and the way I told about what she said to my husband. I'll ask them to try to tell the class what the others told them last time they asked them out.

Exposure (1-2 minutes) • To provide context for the target language throughsome sentences

In this stage, I'll write some of the sentences that I told them before about my conversations. We will discuss which one can be direct speech and which one is the reported speech.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In this stage, students will be asked to find the different words in reported speech. They will realize there are some differences in direct and reported speech.

Clarification (5-6 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

In this stage, I'll start to clarify the meaning first. They will understand the direct speech is reporting the message of the speaker in the exact words as were spoken by someone else, and the indirect speech is to tell somebody what another person said but, we don't use the person's actual words. By the students' help, we'll find out the steps that they have to do to change a direct speech to the reported speech (changing the pronouns and changing the tenses). They will learn more about changing the tenses, as it can be kind of challenging for them. They will have two examples to do for changing direct to indirect speech and vise versa, and they will do by the teacher's help if necessary. At the end they will practice the pronunciation of 'said', 'direct', 'indirect'.(maybe I'll skip this part in demo)

Controlled Practice (12-16 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this stage, SS will be asked to open their books and go to page 149. First, they will do exercise 'a'. They will have 4 minutes to do it individually (in demo just 1 minute) .The answers will be checked by class. Then, they will do the next exercise individually and will have 4 minutes to do it.(in demo 1 minute). Again, the answers will be checked by the class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this stage, SS will discuss the ways we make some excuses to decline an invitation. Then, they will try to change the others excuses to the reported speech.
