Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification and practice of verb-noun collocations in the context of habits
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide gist reading practice using a text about persuasion in the context of lifestyle and human interest stories
Procedure (29-39 minutes)
Start by sharing anecdote with the class - went to markets and ended up buying a jumper I didn't really need and paying quite a bit of money for it. I guess the lady who runs the stall is very good at her job! Encourage ss to share similar experiences Write two questions on the board: 1. Have you ever been persuaded by a salesperson to buy something you didn't actually need? How did they convince you? 2. Have you ever persuaded someone to do something they didn't actually want to do? How did you convince them? Give ss 2-3 mins to discuss in pairs/small groups and exchange anecdotes, then ask one or two ss to share their partners' story. NB: in online class, have Qs on a slide and ask ss to share stories with the whole class.
Tell ss they're about to read a text about an old British TV program called "The people Watchers". Explain briefly that the program explores human behaviour related to persuasion and this text gives some examples. Gist task: ss read quickly. After reading, they look at the Jamboard activity and very quickly match the description to the experiment: https://jamboard.google.com/d/1WGVl9ftJCJ-BwTzhjlysz8iFzjqwB4WKZ5PyDahwpR4/viewer?f=0
Activity 3A pag 71 - rebuild verb-noun collocations by matching verbs with correct nouns. Adapted for online class on Jamboard: https://jamboard.google.com/d/1WGVl9ftJCJ-BwTzhjlysz8iFzjqwB4WKZ5PyDahwpR4/viewer?f=1 Check answers (whole class). Cover Meaning, Form and Pronunciation of verb-noun collocations. Focus on IPA to show similarities in sounds between different words. Model and repeat.
4 on p 78 to provide controlled practice of the language. Adapted for online class on Google Doc: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OwyuH0jKbgByp9xrMEKQq4TUssXKhT82wMc2FrPzbQc/edit Learners do this individually, then check in OCFB.
Get Ss to formulate the collocations into questions with ‘have you ever?’ Ss ask and answer in a mingle activity in BORs.
