Main Aims
-
To provide gist and detailed reading in the context of superheroes.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide speaking and writing practice for SS in order to create their superhero.
Procedure (31-43 minutes)
Ss will watch a video about superheroes and ask them before the video starts to focus on what is the video about "superheroes" and how many characters they know or recognize. After eliciting the word "superheroes", ask them "what comes to your mind when hearing the word "superheroes"? imaginary characters from comics, TV or films who fight evil, help people and save the world and have superpowers. How many characters do you know or recognize from the video? what superpowers do they have?
Show the Ss a photo of Stan Lee and ask them if they know him and what do you think he did. If no one knows, I will answer by telling them that Stan Lee created the Spider-Man character and wrote the original Spider-Man comics. Tell students that they are going to listen to a radio interview with the writer, Robin Baker, who has just written a book about Stan Lee. I'll give students time to read sentences a-e, then play the recording. Students listen and put the topics in order. Check answers with the class. Next, I will pre-teach some vocab e.g. (coma - skyscraper- equipment)
I will ask them to look at Alain photo and ask them what do you think he is doing. To provide reading for gist, I will ask them to read the article and match the topics to paragraphs 1-6. Check in pairs, then provide answer key.
To read for details I'll ask students to read the article again and answer the questions. Early finishers can compare answers in pairs. Check answers with the class. Ask students for their reactions to the article and their opinion of Alain Robert.
I'll put students into groups of three or four. Ask all students to turn to SB p114. Check students are all looking at the correct exercise. Check students understand the phrases in the box and teach any new phrases if necessary. Students work in their groups and create their own superheroes. Students can choose their hero's superpowers from the ideas in the box or invent their own. Students continue working in their groups. Each group continues to develop their superhero's character based on the prompts by taking notes. Each student will have to describe the group's superhero to other students in the next stage of the activity. While students are working, I'll monitor and help them with ideas and new language. Students take turns to describe their superhero to the other groups. When all the students in the group have described their superhero, they decide which they think is the best. Finally, ask students to tell the class about the best
