Main Aims

  • To provide practice of present tense in the context of hypothetical situations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about cosmetic surgery in the context of hypothetical situations

Procedure

Lead - In (4-5 minutes) • To generate interest in the topic

1. T will begin by sharing screen and showing a Google Jamboard with a single question on the slide. “You’ve just won $100,000 in a game of poker, what are you going to buy with it?” 2. T will ask some Ss to share what they would do with their winnings

Vocab (5-7 minutes) • To get Ss familiar with words

1. T will begin by sharing screen showing a Google form with a set of questions on it. 2. T will instruct Ss that have 3 minutes to fill in the blanks with the words given to them individually. (3 minutes) 3. After time is up T will instruct Ss to work in pairs to check their answers and to make sure that they all got the same answers. (2 minutes) 4. After time is up T will bring Ss back into the main Zoom call to go over the answers as a class. (OCFB 2 minutes) 5. After time is up T will share screen showing a Google slide where the class will go over MFP together to help Ss with the next task.

Gist reading (4-5 minutes) • To get Ss to read and formulate opinions on the topic

1. T will begin by sharing screen and showing a Google Form where Ss will be instructed to read a short text alone and by the end formulate an opinion based on the topic of the text. 2. After time is up T will tell Ss that they must now work in pairs to discuss their opinions after reading the text. 3. After time is up T will bring Ss back into the main Zoom call and ask some Ss to share their opinions on the topic that they have just read about.

Analyze (7-8 minutes) • To get the Ss to practice TL

1. T will begin by sharing screen and showing a Google form with a set of questions that will require the Ss to analyse some sentences and decide whether they refer to something in the past or refer to an imaginary hypothetical situation. 2. T will tell Ss that they have 3 minutes to do the activity individually. 3. After time is up, the T will instruct Ss that they must now work in pairs and discuss their answers with each other. 4. After time is T will bring Ss back into the main Zoom call and go over the correct answers as a class.

Discuss (7-8 minutes) • To discuss opinions on the topic

1. T will begin by sharing screen showing a Google JamBoard with a few quotes on it regarding the text that they have just read. 2. T will instruct Ss to decide which of the quotes they most and least agree with. 3. T will break Ss up into pairs to discuss their opinions on the quotes. 4. After time is up, T will bring the Ss back into the main Zoom call and call on some Ss to discuss some of their opinions. 5. After OCFB T will go to the next slide where Ss will have to figure out in pairs the difference between 2 sentences 1.) “I wish you spoke English.” And 2.) “I wish you’d speak English.” 6. After time is up T will bring Ss back into the main Zoom call and explain the difference to them and ask CCQs to ensure Ss understood.

Freer practice (9-10 minutes) • To get Ss to use the TL on their own.

1. T will begin by sharing screen to show a Google JamBoard with a single phrase: If I inherited $100,000, I would… 2. T will demo the activity so Ss see how the activity should be done. 3. After demo, T will break Ss up into pairs so they can share how they would spend their wealth. 4. After time is up T will bring Ss back into the main Zoom call and T will call on some Ss to share their plans with the class.

DEC (1-2 minutes) • To correct any mistakes Ss might have made.
