To provide practice for reading for gist.
Procedure (33-44 minutes)
The students will be presented with following questions about English people: Do you know any English people? If so, where and how did you meet them? What are they like? If not, what do you think they are like? They will be split into BoR to discuss these questions for 3 mins. After one or two students will be asked to share with the class.
Students will be presented with a text to read (taken from F2F Upper-Intermediate). They will be asked to read the text individually and after will be asked a gist question about this. The text will be the model for what they will be expected to talk about later in the production section of the class.
Following useful phrases will be introduced to the students: People often …. all of the phrases: It is thought to be rude … + verb+ing It isn’t unusual … + infinitive It is totally normal … It is polite … It is uncommon … Two of these will be looked at in more detail in regards to stress, linking and pronounciation. After eliciting stress and linking from the students, there will be choral drills followed by individual drills.
Students will be presented with following task: Imagine an English tourist is coming to your country. Think about five tips for them about the social codes in your country. Students will be given some ideas to prompt them and then will have 2 minutes to think about this on their own. Afterwards they will be split into BoR to tell each other the tips and compare for 5 mins. They will switch partners once if there is enough time. Back in class one or two students will be asked to share their top tips.
Some of the errors noticed during the monitoring of the Production Task will be pointed out to students and the correct way of saying/using it will be elicited from them.
